Yuan Xiao Festival started from Han Dynasty (206BC-221AD) and has had a history for more than 2000 years.

The main activities of Yuan Xiao Festival is to see lanterns, watching lion or Dragon dance, play Chinese Riddles and Games in the streets in the moon light.

The main food of Yuan Xiao Festival is to eat small dumpling balls or name “tang yuan” that were made of glutinous rice flour and there is some sweet or salty stuffing inside, it symbolizes family unity, completeness and happiness.

Yuan Xiao Festival is on the 15th of the first lunar month.   That is why, it is on the different day each year. Yuan Xiao Festival marks the end of celebrations of the New Year.

Right now, some people also call Yuan Xiao Festival “the China’s Valentine's Day” for it is an good opportunity for lovers to meet and to express their love. However, it is just a parlance in civilian. It has not been accepted by the country and most of Chinese yet. :-)
