Shirly Sung China (Northern) Folk Song--049: Happiness Will Not Drip down From the Heaven

LISTEN TO SHIRLEY SINGING THE SONG

On Sunday night, my vocal music teacher gave me a music lesson before going back to Lanzhou, her hometown.

This is a song from a Chinese Movie -- The Young People in Our Village that was made in 1959 in admiration of a group of young people who had worked hard to change their hometown from being poor to be rich and flourishing.

I have known this song for many years, but this afternoon I read the lyrics for the first time and was immediately attracted by it.

I do hope the song I have learned to sing and my commentary will be little help to you in knowing more about Chinese culture and Chinese language.

MAIN MENAING OF THE SONGLISTEN TO SHIRLEY SINGING THE SONG

Happiness Will Not Drip down From the Heaven

The cherry is good to eat,
its tree is not easy to plant
its flowers will not blossom without hard work.
Happiness will not drip from heaven,
the beautiful flowers will not open by waiting for them.

Do not complain our hometown is having a hard time right now,
Its treasure is as a legendary luminous pearl
just covered in the land.
As long as we water it with our sweat day and night,
the happy flowers will blossom everywhere.
