Hello, my name is Shirley Yiping Zhang.I am a full time student of Graduate School and Chinese Painting School at Chinese National Academy of Arts in Beijing. I will complete my 4th class year in July, 2014. I was also a full time student of China Central Academy of Fine Arts for 1 year. Before I entered CNAA & CAFA, I had learned Chinese painting from a professor for 8 years and vocal music from 3 teachers for 9 years.

I have been educated at 8 universities over a total of 17 years. I was majoring in Chinese painting, Chinese language and literature, business management as a full time students for 9 years, and world economics, journalism and English as a part time student for 8 years. I got my master’s degree in Missouri State University, USA..

I was an instructor to teach Ancient Chinese and Classical Literature for 9 years, an editor and a manager in the Chinese Securities News & Information Industry for 18 years.

Since I achieved my career dream in the Chinese securities industry in 2000. I have been working on my childhood and lifetime’s dream: to study, explore and create my own E-bridge cross-culture and comprehensive art system with paintings, music, writing on the Internet and in the real world.

Here is what I have understood, studied and done until now:

Definition of the Current E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art Project

It is an art series that is based on Chinese painting, focused on Chinese poetry, combining music and singing, multiple-languages (right now, it includes Chinese and English), Chinese Characters and calligraphy, essays and cultural background. Its purpose is to help non-Chinese speakers and anyone who is interested in Chinese culture, arts and language to learn naturally, easily and artistically.

Its transmission style is to be: “ face to face + multi – media ( Internet + mass media ) ”

The Main Content of the Current E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art

Includes 5 series:

1. Vocal,Bilingual Poetry & Painting Series : Learn
   Chinese Culture & Language by Enjoying Paintings, Music & Poetry;
2. Stories behind Chinese Painting Series;
3. Traditional Chinese Painting Series:
   Chinese Baimiao Paintings
   Chinese Gongbi--Realistic Paintings
   Chinese Xieyi--Freehand Brushworks
   Mixed Gongbi & Xieyi Paintings
   Chinese Mogu Painting
4. Music written by me for Chinese poems
5. Bilingual Chinese Songs

These series and whole of the web site include my 850 paintings; 162 translations of Chinese poems and 130 translation of Chinese folk songs; 196 singings in Chinese (162 Chinese poems and 130 Chinese folk songs in Chinese, 80 poems and 50 folk songs in Chinese and in English); More than 3000 articles on Chinese culture and about 800 records of Chinese poems, music, singings and language

The Target Users of E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art:

1. Chinese language learners and teachers
2. Chinese art learners
3. Anyone who are interested in Chinese culture, art and    language
4. Researchers of cross-culture and interdisciplinary training.

The Theoretical Basis of E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art:

-- Art is, in essence, a tool. Artists express their thoughts and feelings in different artistic languages, governments use the ideas in the arts to help them to manage their countries and ordinary people choose arts to please themselves. Just like the different tableware on a dining table can substitute for, complement and support each other to help the diner to enjoy his food more comfortably. Sister arts can also interact to affect audiences naturally. Combining the process of learning a culture or a language with the process of enjoying other, various art forms, makes the whole process more interesting and enjoyable, and helps learners to grasp knowledge and skills more easily.

-- Traditional Chinese arts are essentially comprehensive. Chinese painting is made up of poetry, calligraphy, painting and stamps of chops; Chinese classical poems were sung in ancient times; Chinese calligraphy and painting came from the same rootstock; Chinese traditional art theory emphasizes that a good painting should include the artistic conception of a poem and a good poem should include artistic conception of a painting. By enjoying the comprehensive arts (including paintings, music, poems and articles), people will be able to learn Chinese culture and language naturally.

-- Chinese classical poems are mainly made of Chinese primary words. Chinese primary words are universal (they are used by all Chinese speakers), stable (they have been used since they were created) and have prolificacy (they are the roots of new words). Learning Chinese classical poetry is the best way to encounter Chinese primary words and to open the door of Chinese language and culture. Therefore, almost all Chinese children start their Chinese learning by reciting classical poems.

Based on the above understanding, I have chosen Chinese painting as one of my comprehensive art works’ media, focused on the core of Chinese paintings – poetry; adding music, languages (Chinese and English), literature (poetry comments), historical background (about the poets and the stories behind their poems), and the inspirations (what we can learned from the ideas of the poems or its written style in the ancient times, to purify our spirits and to improve our skills in the contemporary era), to create a new and unique comprehensive art, to help non-Chinese speakers to learn about Chinese culture and language artistically, easily and naturally.

The Transmission Mode of E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art

The transmission mode and channels of this project should be multi-media style, Internet, paper media, DVD, TV, mobile phone and face to face by teaching, exhibitions, events, publications and so on.

The transmission frequency should be daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly.

The Work Result of E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art 2000 to 2013

Firstly, A little Internet platform www.ebridge.cn has been run for 8 years, it has had 11,000 registered users from more than 30 countries. A group of volunteers are working on it.

Secondly, I have found the way to improve my own Chinese art level on theory and practice, completed the transformation from securities to the arts, from an amateur to an professional artist through the study in the best Chinese academy of fine arts and the highest Chinese arts research institution base on 8 years study in my free time.

Thirdly, I have found the key to connect the arts of Traditional Chinese Painting, Modern Chinese Language and Music that is Chinese Classical Poetry, since poetry is the core of a Chinese painting; it could be sung originally, its surface feature on a Chinese painting is calligraphy and character, its sound is Chinese vocal language, its characters are the primary words of Modern Chinese Language, and Chinese primary words are stable – since it was created, it has not been changed; they are universal – all people who speak Chinese use them; the most important point – they are the root of words ( character) of Modern Chinese Language. In case people master it, they have opened the door of Modern Chinese Language. Learn Chinese primary by learning Chinese poetry is the one of the best methods. Therefore, almost all Chinese children recite Chinese classical before they enter the elementary schools. Chinese poetry could sung since it was created, therefore, when I write a poem on a Chinese painting, that means I have written a lyric on it. When I created a piece of music for the poem on my painting, I just did something to recover the original feature of a Chinese poem.

So, when we carry the key of a Chinese painting – poetry, we catch the core to connect the Modern Chinese Language, Music and Character. Plus the history background of the poetry, and its inspirations to the contemporary society, the value of learning Chinese classical poetry is obvious.

Base on this theory study and thinking, I have created the first “Vocal, Bilingual Poetry & Painting Series in China and in the world.”

During the Study and Exploration, Two formal publications have been published by Jinan University Press in 2003 and 2002:

1. Volume One of E-bridge Series Books and DVD II: “Together with Me, Learn Chinese Culture and Language by Enjoying Paintings, Music and Poetry” was published May, 2013

2. Volume 1- 4 of E-bridge Series Books and DVDs I: Together with Mr. Learn Real American English (Mastermind and translator, 0.93 million word) was published in Oct, 2002

Fourthly, 3 individual Chinese comprehensive art exhibitions were held in the USA 2009 – 2013, another 3 ones will be held in 2014 – 2015:

Sep 04 – 25, 2009:"Visit China - Right Here in Springfield "at the Creamery Art Center, Springfield, MO, USA

In 2015: individual exhibition (the title has not been made sure yet) at Art & Letter Store in Springfield, MO, USA

Fifthly, I have given 100 free teachings in 31 schools, art organizations and my temporary domicile in the USA. 2300 American students attended my classes, more than 200 American artists and more 50 American Chinese teachers have communicated with me face to face.

Since 2011, the learners in my classrooms have not only the art students, but also language students; since 2013, the teaching content has been enlarged to both of Chinese poetry and language. The Chinese painting’s teaching has also been enlarged to Chinese line drawing (Baimiao) from the from Chinese Xieyi.

No matter the Chinese painting and Chinese poetry are all focused on the most classical things in the Chinese history. Such as the poetry in the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) and the paintings in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) . Students did not learn to paint, to read, but also to sing, to complete their classes in the cheerful chatting and laughing.

Sixthly, as an individual, I have made the biggest effort to develop this cross-culture and comprehensive art project, by helping as many as possible students and adults to learn Chinese culture, arts and language by traveling at my own expense, offering free teachings, donating paintings and painting tools and whole of the income of my exhibition. All of these should become friendly seeds of Chinese culture, arts and language on the land of the other culture:

The Meaning of E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art

1.It creates a new subject areas combining artistic Chinese in Chinese as a foreign language field, creating a new field of study combining Chinese art with Chinese as a foreign language.

2. It gives Chinese painting a new function - delivering Chinese culture to other cultures.

3. It is exploring and developing a new business chain and business model.

4. It offers a research sample on how to deliver one culture to the other cultures and on interdisciplinary interaction

5. It directly help non-Chinese speakers and “ Chinese Fans” to learn Chinese culture, art and language.

This study and exploration got warm welcome and sincere comments from the local American friends and the Hanban (the Office of Chinese Language Council International)/Confucius Institute Headquarters.

For example:

-- In City of Pikeville, Kentucky, the numbers of my classes from the planed 11 hours, changed to be the actual 24 hours May 14 to May 22, 2013;

-- In Lexington, Kentucky, as soon as I finished my speech at the Seminar of 2011 Kentucky World Conference, I got 10 invitations from the local American Chinese teachers, because of my time, just I could go to 6 schools of them. And in the Crawford Middle School, I was asked to given 8 lessons in one business day.

-- In Seymour R-II School, after giving 3 Chinese poetry lessons to 3 groups of middle school students, another 3 groups of high school students joined in us; and some students even asked to sing a Chinese poem song when they were painting a Chinese Xieyi Painting.

-- In Beijing, the Division of Teaching Materials at Hanban /Confucius Institute Headquarters
Commented the values of my publication:

The conception of the book is novelty.

From the perspective of foreign language teaching, the publication has combined the graphics, essays, recitations, singing audio and various forms, it has offered the overseas Chinese learners a natural, convenient and artistic approaches to learn Chinese and Chinese classical culture .

The commendable is: the translations of the poems, the paintings, recitations and singings were all completed by Shirley Yiping Zhang, it undoubtedly indicate her good knowledge background and a high artistic and acqierement level.

From the perspective of cultural transmission, with an innovation style, the author created music, paintings for the classical poems, and she wished to endow the ancient Chinese traditional poetry and painting some totally new transmitting forms to deliver Chinese culture abroad should also be worthy of recognition.

Problems Facing the E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art Project

1. Working far away from the target market, the long distance and short time for travel limit the value of my long-term hard work maximized; I cannot satisfy the needs of the target users.

2. Working as an individual limits the level of research and creation, work speed, and size of the project.

3. Financed entirely by myself, the work speed, size and quality of the project is limited.

4. The development between the online and offline parts of the project are not in balance.

The Options for Developing E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art Project:

1.Via a merger, making E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art become a part of a big organization, so working on a bigger platform and creating a win-win project.

2.Via being hired, to join in and to work for a big education or art organization, to carry the E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art Project into this organization, partly or totally, to develop it on a bigger platform.

3.Via a project cooperation with some middle or small organizations.

4.Via direct investment, to develop the E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art project under the control of the fund owner.

5.Via a private E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art studio, to continue this project.

6.Via the sale of all of the former work results (art works, web site, copyright), to finish this project.

Now for me, as long as I can see the sun, I will not choose the No. 6, but I will work on the other options. As long as one of them works, that will be good. No matter what happens to me in the future, I will continue to work on the project. The only difference will be the size and speed.

The Main Work of E-bridge Cross-culture and Comprehensive Art in the Upcoming 3 Years:
