Chinese Art Song--010: Xue -- Snow

LISTEN TO SHIRLEY TO SING THE POEM/SONG

Hi, friend, today I would like to introduce a new Chinese art song -- Qing Yuan Chun ? Xue, in English means Snow. The lyrics of the song is a classical peom by China's former leader -- Mr. Mao Zedong(1893 -1976). Days ago, I introdued you another poem and song by him Die Lian Hua -- Butterfly Loves Flower. Maybe you will ask why Shirley enjoys Mr. Mao's poems so much. Yes, I do think that from literature angle, Mr. Mao is really a greatest poet that I have touched. The 37 poems that he left in the world are really some very great art works, they are all quite standrad clssical poems and full of the breath of the heroism and romanticism as well.

This poem was written in 1936 and was published in Poepl's Daily on Oct 20, 1946, when the China's War of Liberation was started. It expressed Mr. Mao's very high spirit and great ambitious...

I do enjoy the music of this peom. Anyway, it is a too "big "song for me so that I have learned it for 6 weeks. Just hope you enjoy it and it is a littl bit helpful to your Chinese learning via my singing... :-)

MAIN MEANING OF THE SONG/POEMLISTEN TO SHIRLEY TO SING THE POEM/SONG

Translation By Hubei Education College:

Snow

North country scene:
A hundred leagues locked in ice,
A thousand leagues of whirling snow.
Both side of the Great Wall
One single white immensity.
The Yellow River's swift current
Is stilled from end to end.
The mountains dance silver snakes
And the highland charge like wax-hued elephants.
Vying with heaven in stature.
On a fine day, the land,
Clad in white, adorned in red,
Crows more enchanting.

This land so rich in beauty
Has made countless heroes bow in homage.
But alas! Qin Shihuang and Han Wudi
Were lacking in literary grace,
And Tang Taizong and Song Taizu
Had little poetry in their souls;
That proud son of Heaven,
Genghis Khan,
Knew only shooting eagles,
bow outstretched.
All are past and gone!
For truly great men
Look to this age alone.
