Shirley's (Europe) Traveling Diary --002: From Hong Kong to Bangkok

I am so lucky that now there are several friends who are native English speakers as volunteers to help me to correct my English via my edition system online right now. We are working in different places in the world at different time rely on our convenience. :-)

Today I would like to show you the first article that has been corrected by a volunteer friend from the other side of the Ocean. This is one of my Europe travel diaries that I wrote in 2000 and hope to bring you a big smile. :-)

If you are a native English speaker or you were major English in the university or you are working in English in your profession field. You are welcomed to be a volunteer to help me while to help the others and yourself to improve the English level on the web site or offer something positive and meaningful via pictures, writings and sound files and so on, rely on what you are interested in …:-)

I am looking forward to get your help, support and direction... :-) If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please write to shirley@ebridge.cn or shirleyz004@yahoo.com. You are welcomed to publish your opinions in the forum.

My flight, which was with Gulf Airlines, took off from Hong Kong airport at 3:30 pm Beijing time, on the 26th Sept. 2000 and arrived at Bangkok airport at about 6:30 pm, then I flew to Oman where I had to change plane to fly to Paris via Bahrain and Damascus.

Hong Kong International airport is bigger than either Beijing or Shanghai airports. Its main characteristic, in my opinion, is its steel and glass structure. The steel structure which forms the roof is very complex but also clear and beautiful making the building look very tall, wide and comfortable.

The service in Hong Kong airport is very good. When I first entered the airport, I could not find the assembly point for my tour group and a lady came over to me and asked me whether I needed help. I was able to find the rest of my group quite quickly thanks to her detailed directions.

It’s a pity that I couldn’t take any pictures of the airport, but time was tight. However, I tried to take some pictures through the window of the plane as it was landing at Bangkok International airport. I was very lucky to be able to take a picture of another plane landing. The white and red plane against a background of green trees and grass and some distant orange houses presented to my eyes and to the screen of my camera a picture that was very beautiful. It was so cool to view the pictures as I continued my journey.

A man who was on his way to Jordan to work on an assembly line mistakenly got off the plane. Our group tried to help the people accompanying him to look for him. I was really surprised at how they could go to live in a totally strange country as foreigners, not able to speak either English or the local language. I admired their courage very much indeed.

The dresses of the air hostesses were very interesting and beautiful. All their hats had pieces of gauze kerchief, most of them were gray, but a few were orange. The dresses made the girls look very Arabian and very beautiful. I really wanted to take a picture of them but I didn’t think it would be polite so I sketched them quickly. I thought that, one day, I could paint them from memory.

It seems as though people from at least four different races work for the airline judging from the colors of their skins which were yellow, white, black and brown. I felt that all the people were so kind and friendly. We stayed in the same room for several hours and we smiled, nodded, spoke and helped each other and had a nice time together.

Much of the time I was listening to symphonic music and I was surprised by the power and the strength of the music, and then it became peaceful and calm for my journey from Hong Kong to Bangkok.
