Shirley's Art of Painting

Hello, nice to meet you. I am Shirley Yiping Zhang, a full time student of Chinese Painting School / Graduate Scool at Chinese National Academy of Arts, Beijing, China.

I am really happy to meet you via Internet and since the moment that you entered in the little web site, you have touched a part of E-bridge Cross-Culture and Comprehensive Art, which I have been studying, thinking and exploring since 2000, and a part of my school assignments at China Central Academy of Fine Arts (Nov 2010-July 2011)and Chinese National Academy of Arts ( Sep 2011 to now).

Maybe you would like to ask:   What is the E-bridge comprehensive art? Why did I create it?

Current E-bridge comprehensive art can be considered to consist partly of some vocal, bilingual poems, paintings and article series. It was created to help non-Chinese speakers to learn Chinese culture and language through the process of enjoying Chinese paintings, music and poetry, then go a step further by painting Chinese paintings , singing Chinese songs, reading and reciting Chinese poetry.

Currently the E-bridge Comprehensive Art Product includes five main series and some sub-series:

I. Vocal, bilingual Chinese poems, paintings and article series (Learning Chinese culture and language by enjoying paintings, music and poetry series);
II. Stories behind Shirleys Chinese paintings and music series;
III. Shirley   created music for Chinese classical poems and singing series;
VI. Shirleys bilingual Chinese folk song series;
V. Shirleys Chinese painting series:
-- Chinese Gongbi Paintings
-- Chinese Xieyi Paintings
-- Chinese Mixed Gongbi & Xieyi Paintings
-- Chinese Mogu Paintings
-- Chinese Baimiao Paintings

The first group of works from part I and III have been collected into a booklet and DVD, and be edited to be a publication, and will be published with name: 鐚膸羆莚 Together with Me, Learn Chinese Culture and Language by Enjoy Paintings, Music and Poetry, and be published by Jinan University before June, 2013.

Via this publication, you can

Together with Me,

Enjoy and Paint Chinese Paintings,
Listen to and Sing Chinese Poetry Songs,
Read and Recite Chinese Poetry and Vocabulary

by listening to the original music that I created for Chinese classical poems, listening to me reciting and singing the Chinese poems in Chinese and in English, seeing the large size paintings I painted for the poems , reading the cultural background of the poets, poetry, paintings and music, listening to the explanation of each line and every Chinese character, and follow me to read or recite the new words and phrases, lines and poems. If you have the inclination, you can also paint Chinese paintings, sing Chinese poems to the music included in the publication, recite the poems along with me, to learn about Chinese culture and language easily, naturally and artistically.

The Theoretical Basis of E-bridge Comprehensive Art   I chose this method to introduce Chinese culture and language to non-Chinese speakers, mainly base on the instrumental character of art, the comprehensiveness of Chinese painting and the universality, stability and productiveness of Chinese primary words.

In my opinion:

-- Art is, in essence, a tool. Artists express their thoughts and feelings in different art languages, governments use the ideas in arts to help them to manage their countries and ordinary people choose arts to please themselves. Just like the different tableware on a dining table can substitute for, complement and support each other to help the diner to enjoy his food more comfortably,   sister arts can also interact to affect audiences naturally. Combining the process of learning a culture or a language with the process of enjoying other, various art forms, makes the whole process more interesting and enjoyable, and helps learners to grasp knowledge and skills more easily.

-- Traditional Chinese arts are essentially comprehensive. Chinese painting is made up of poetry, calligraphy, painting and stamp; Chinese classical poems were sung in ancient times; Chinese calligraphy and painting come from the same rootstock; Chinese traditional art theory emphasizes that a good painting should include the artistic conception of a poem and a good poem should include artistic conception of a painting. By enjoying the comprehensive arts (including paintings, music, poems and articles), people will be able to learn Chinese culture and language naturally.

-- Chinese classical poems are mainly made of Chinese primary words. Chinese primary words are universal (they are used by all Chinese speakers), stable (they have been used since they were created) and have prolificacy (they are the roots of new words). Learning Chinese classical poetry is the best way to encounter Chinese primary words and to open the gate of Chinese language and culture. Therefore, almost all Chinese children start their Chinese learning by reciting classical poems.

Based on the above understanding, I have chosen Chinese painting as one of my comprehensive art works media, focused on the core of Chinese paintings poetry; add music, languages (Chinese and English), literature (poetry comments), historical background (about the poets and the stories behind the poems), to create a new and unique comprehensive art, to help non-Chinese speakers to learn about Chinese culture and language artistically, easily and naturally.

The Mode of Transmission will be multi-media style, Internet, paper, DVD, TV, mobile phone and one type of face to face events.

An art exhibition or an album of paintings is just one type of face to face events that will mainly show you the 5th part of my Comprehensive Art Chinese Painting Series.
