|#|Zhang Jiuling 綣箙蘊 zhn鼻 ji l鱈n鼻 (678-740), was born in Qujiang (in modern Shaoguan, Guangdong). He was a prominent prime minister, and served as chancellor during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong.He became known for his ability to understand people's talents and he insisted on using talented people as officials, so he had a good reputation as aVirtuous Prime Minister.
Zhang Jiuling was also one of the noted and transitional poets between Prosperous and Flourishing Tang Dynasty,and his work influenced many later poets, such as Li Bai, Du Fu and so on.
|#||#|Wang Yue Huai YuanLooking at the Moon & Missing Someone Faraway was written at the time Zhang Jiuling was demoted. There are 8 lines in this poem. It expresses the feelings of missing a lover or a family member faraway. It is famous because it expresses the feelings of thinking of someone else by the way of imagining how the other is thinking of him, instead of directly describing how the poet misses the other.
Because the first part of the poem is quite famous, it has been included in almost all anthologies of poems. I will also just mainly introduce this part to you.
The first two lines: 羌隙鐚紊羔掩ゆ hi shn鼻 shn鼻 m鱈n鼻 yu竪, tin y叩 鼻嘆n鼻 c sh鱈A bright moon is rising over the sea鐚 we see her from afar at the same time.
The first line catches thelooking at the moon part of the title, writing about the view, and creating a boundless, gallant and moving view. The second line picks up on the second part of the title, thinking of the person faraway;the poet writes about the feeling, quickly and totally catching the meaning of the title, that maybe, on the other side of the sea, she is also thinking of him. Instead of speaking for himself, he is thinking of the other person, he says the other person is missing him; the conception is clever and implicative.With such an easy style, he has quickly and totally caught the meaning of the title, which is just one of the characteristics of Zhang's poemsto express his feelings naturally.
The verb 鐚鐔鐔鐔ﾉ≠(be in birth, is born, raise) is very vivid, saying the moonis given birth to by the sea. The ocean, the moon and the skyline, the poet and the other in his heart on the other side of the ocean in the same moonlight have been connected together, creating a great artistic conception.
Looking at the moon is an act in reality, and to miss someone afar is in the imagination.The first two lines combine the two situations, creating a landscape in the bright moonlight that includes the feeling of thinking of (someone) far away. This leaves plenty of room for the association of ideas and for the imagination.
The third and fourth lines鐚篋ュ, 腴紊莎 q鱈n鼻 r辿n yun y叩o y竪, j狸n鼻 x朝 q xin鼻 s朝Sweethearts complain the night is too long;lovesick, we stay up all night.
From the imagination in the second line, coming back to reality, these lines express how the lovers miss each other in the moon?lit night, so that they can't sleep and so stay up all night.
The lovers on opposite sides of the ocean think deeply about each other so that they cannot sleep, and they do not know when the dawn will come, so that they cannot help yuncomplaining the night is really too long. The word yuncomplain includes so much deep love and unlimited wishes for each other, they look forward to seeing the long night pass, and hope to reach the day when the endless missing of each other during the long nights is over and they are together again.
In the following 4 lines, the poet imagines how his lover (or wife) puts out the candle, puts on some clothes and goes out of the door to look at the moon for a long time, until the dew wets her clothes. Because she can not see him and it is impossible for her to carry a double handful of moonlight to him in the far away place, she decides to go back to sleep and hopes to see him in a sweet dream.
The deep affection in the poem is expressed serenely, lingeringly and there is not any sorrow;the language is natural and fluent. This style has directly influenced Meng Haoran and Wang Wei in their poetic style.
|#|I enjoy this poem because of its wonderful imagination. I am thinking, if we say that life is the source of art, then,imagination may be the wing of artistic creativity. Without good imagination there would be no great works of art. Anyway, there is positive imagination and negative imagination, and only the former results in positive art works. This will depend on the attitude to the life of the artist.Only an artist who has a positive and sincere attitude to the life, can have a positive imagination and so create wonderful art works. Do you agree?
With so much enjoyment of this poem, I translated it and wrote a piece of music for the first part in 2006 and created a painting for the poem and the music in 2007. Then at Chinese National Academy of Arts, I painted a painting to go with the music and poem in 2012.
