The 44th Friendly Greeting From Shirley, China, Sun, July 2, 2006

Hi,Dear Friends

How are you? Is everything well with you? I do hope you are well and have a good weekend.

This week, one of the company projects that I am leading topped 11000 registered users, even though it is not yet complete, and statistics from this project will be published by a famous economic monthly magazine soon. Two other short projects have entered the investigations phase. Apart from publishing an online questionnaire for all our colleagues, someone will go with me to Hong Kong to visit 4 famous organizations from America, Britain and Hong Kong in July; we hope that it will open our eyes and that we will learn something more advanced.

Instead of having a political movement, we are formulating a set of Company Business Action Guidelines and an Employees' Occupational Morality Code. We would like to take positive steps to cut out bribery in business whilst ensuring our company's development remains stable.

This week, a telephone call from a good friend made me realize that my English listening ability needs much improvement. Anyway, I don't have time to attend our British teacher's oral English lessons at the company, so I try to listen to the BBC whenever I'm in my car. I'm interested in its gathering material reports from people from different countries. It is helping me to understand different sorts English and different accents.

The deepest feeling I had during my holiday in Europe was that everyone spoke her/his own English. Some were easy to understand, others were not, even though most of them were the native English speakers. It seemed to me that every country had its own version of English... :-) Anyway, our textbook just teaches us one kind of English, that of a broadcaster... :-) So, maybe this is just one of the reasons that many students can pass some authoritative English test with a high mark, but they would not understand a lesson by a professor if she/he did not speak the same as a broadcaster and with the same accent... :-)

Is English your mother language, the second or the third language? Do you feel as I feel that everyone seems to speak different kinds of English? :-)

Chinese Gongbi & Xieyi--020(Flower and Bird): Butterfly Lovers 02
This is the first time that I have used both the Chinese Gongbi and Xieyi styles of painting in the same picture. I colored the bottom half using the Gongbi style -- I drafted it on a piece of paper in pencil, copied it onto a piece of silk with Chinese ink and then I colored it. I painted the top half, the mountains, directly onto the silk with brushes without first doing a draft. I was not satisfied with my 19th Chinese Gongbi picture that I completed last weekend, so I have re-painted and corrected it this week. It is not easy to decide to re-paint a picture, but if I am going to do something, I want to do my best and not with 80% or 90% effort. Do you like my experimental work?

Chinese Xieyi-- 082(Flower and Bird):What Are You Thinking?
I often ask myself why Chinese Xieyi landscape paintings seem so meaningful. Maybe because within its small size it offers more room for the imagination as opposed to the Chinese Gongbi flower and bird pictures which pay more attention to detail - it seems more like a feature. Maybe if we could combine both styles we could give the latter a bigger and more meaningful background, so I am trying to make the Chinese Xieyi paintings in my art lesson act as color drafts for my Chinese Gongbi or my Gouache paintings. I'm sure that the lifeblood of art is creativity, do you agree?

Shirley Sung Chinese (Hebei) Folk Song--0026: Going Back My Parents' Home
In Chinese culture it is customary for a newly married woman to visit her parents with her new husband on the 3rd day after the marriage. In this song, the daughter in law has had a baby, so she goes back to her parents by herself. I like this song because it tells us a funny story about the young lady on the road in a humorous style with beautiful music and a strong Hebei local color. I do hope my singing it will help you understand more about Chinese culture and help you to improve your Chinese listening ability... :-)

Chinese Classical Poem--0046 & Shirley Created Music-0036: Cai Lian Qu -- The Song of Picking Water Lily
This poem relates some of the views that a group of girls experienced in a single day -- The sun was red when they set out from the sandbank in the morning; the clouds rose over the river in the evening. Luckily their neighbor girl knew how to deal with the situation and the water lily boat did not fear the wind, so they came back singing. The lively views, characters, and sounds describe a bigger picture which is very beautiful. I have written a piece of music to go with it and I hope that you enjoy my music, singing and commentary.

Chinese in Daily Life-0023(Sentence:130--134): Talking About The World Cup...
Are you interested in the World Cup? Are you watching it? Last time, I introduced some new words about football in the column Vocabulary in Chinese.Today, I would like to introduce a few new sentences and hope they are a little help to you in learning Chinese.

I am just a learner in art, music, English and work on the web site in my free time. Anyway, I would really like to do a little with what I have learned to make this little web site An Electronic Bridge Of Culture Exchange, Friendship, and Language Learning. During the process to help the others and to improve myself. :-)

I do appreciate your understanding, directions and support. I do hope to get your great help continuously now and in the future...

If you have any questions, comments and suggestions, please write to shirley@ebridge.cn , or shirleyz004@yahoo.com, You are also welcome to publish your opinions in the forum. :-)
